Basement Remodeling & Finished Basements in NJ
An unfinished basement is among the most underutilized spaces in any home. In Ocean and Monmouth County, where usable square footage carries real value, that space is worth putting to work. At GYB Construction, basements are transformed into finished, fully livable rooms — built to code, managed in-house, and completed to the same standard applied to every project we take on.

What a Finished Basement Adds to Your Home
Finished basements are completed for a range of purposes throughout the region. Home offices, guest suites, in-law apartments, entertainment rooms, and playrooms are all regularly built out by the GYB team. The use case shapes the layout, the lighting plan, the flooring selection, and the egress requirements — all of which are addressed before framing begins.
Beyond livability, a finished basement adds measurable resale value. In a coastal market where buyers weigh usable square footage carefully, a properly finished basement is a documented return on investment. It is also far less disruptive than a room addition, as no footprint is added to the property.
Moisture and Waterproofing — Addressed First
In Ocean and Monmouth County, moisture management is treated as the foundation of any basement remodel. The region’s water table, seasonal humidity, and proximity to the coast make this a non-negotiable first step — not an afterthought.
Waterproofing is handled entirely in-house by GYB Construction. No referrals are made to outside specialists. The source and severity of any moisture intrusion is assessed before a single wall is framed. Interior drainage, vapor barriers, and sump systems are installed as needed based on the specific conditions of the space.
Skipping this step leads to mold, structural damage, and failed finishes. Addressing it properly from the start protects every dollar invested in the finished space above it.

Framing Walls are framed to define the layout of the finished space. Room configurations, closet placement, and mechanical access points are all planned at this stage. Pressure-treated lumber is used at the base plate level where contact with concrete is made — a standard practice that is frequently overlooked in shortcuts.
Waterproofing and Moisture Control As noted above, waterproofing is completed in-house. Interior perimeter drainage systems, vapor barriers, and sump pump installation are all part of the GYB scope. The finished walls and floors are only installed once the space is confirmed dry and protected.
Electrical and Lighting Basement electrical work is coordinated with licensed electricians. Recessed lighting, outlet placement, dedicated circuits for home offices or entertainment systems, and egress window wells with lighting are all handled as part of the project. All work is inspected and permitted through the applicable township.
HVAC Proper climate control is extended to the finished space through coordination with HVAC professionals. Existing ductwork is extended or supplemented based on the layout and the intended use of the room. A finished basement that is not properly conditioned loses its value quickly.
Sheetrock and Insulation Walls and ceilings are insulated and finished with sheetrock to create a clean, dry living environment. Insulation selection accounts for the below-grade environment — a detail that directly affects both comfort and energy efficiency year-round.
Flooring Flooring is selected based on the use of the space and the moisture conditions present. Luxury vinyl plank, tile, and engineered hardwood are all installed in finished basements throughout Ocean and Monmouth County. Solid hardwood is not recommended below grade due to moisture sensitivity.
Painting and Trim Finishing work is completed to the same standard applied above grade. Trim, doors, and painted surfaces are treated as part of the overall design — not as a final rush to get off the job.

Permits and Code Compliance in Ocean and Monmouth County
Finished basements in New Jersey require permits. Habitable space below grade is subject to building, electrical, plumbing, and in some cases fire suppression review. Egress requirements — including window size and placement — are enforced in Ocean and Monmouth County townships.
Those requirements are navigated by GYB Construction on your behalf. Permit applications are filed, inspections are scheduled, and the project is closed out with a certificate of occupancy where required. Work that is done without permits creates problems at resale and can expose the homeowner to liability. That risk is eliminated when the project is managed correctly from the start.
Why Ocean and Monmouth County Homeowners Choose GYB Construction
Basement remodeling is a multi-trade project and often part of a broader home renovation or remodeling. Waterproofing, framing, electrical, HVAC, insulation, flooring, and finishing all need to be coordinated in the right sequence. When that coordination breaks down, timelines slip and quality suffers.
At GYB Construction, the entire project is managed under one roof. Owner Gustavo Beristain oversees every phase directly. Subcontractors brought in for licensed trades — electrical and HVAC — are established relationships, not one-time hires. The standard of work expected is communicated and enforced throughout.
Homeowners across Ocean and Monmouth County are not passed between project managers or handed off once the contract is signed. The same team that conducts the estimate sees the project through to the final walkthrough.
